Social Media in Public Relations

This blog was created for my Public Relations class and this particular post is in a way a review of the semester so far and just my opinion of social media and how it affects PR professionals.  Which is unfair because I’m not a PR professional, just college kid in a PR class as of now in fact I’m not sure I’m going to pursue PR yet. But as is assigned I need to give my opinion of the tools we have used so far and how it relates to PR. So here is a quick synopsis of what we’ve used to far.

WordPress blog: You get to practice your writing, reach out to people, spill your thoughts. Verdict: Very Useful

Twitter: Similar to blogging in that it’s a message that you can put out to the public, more accessible than blogging though. Limited space to put on a message, but quick and easy to use. Ability to see what people you personally care about have to say at any given time. Verdict: Very Useful (even if I hardly use it)

 

Figuring out FourSquare

So there’s this little known thing called FourSquare, well its actually pretty popular. Popular enough to be mocked by College Humor actually. I have a few friends that have it I never understood it’s use I was under the impression that it was a game, which it kinda is in a way is. But there is a practical use for it apparently. When you ‘check in’ to a place you receive points and eventually badges which can lead to promotional material from the place you check in like some fast food joint.

Do I think it’s useful for a PR professional? Not really no. I see its uses, but I just don’t see how it can really help out that much for a true professional, I see a lot of kids my age using it and I think that’s where it belongs in the hands of college students on their androids and Iphones. Maybe someone will change my mind someday and I’ll be addicted to it too, but as of right now I don’t recommend it.

AT&T Causes More Headaches

I was on my way back to my dorm when I noticed at our newsstand a copy of USA Today with the headline AT&T buys T-Mobile. I have T-Mobile and I like it.  It’s cheaper than AT&T I’ve never really wanted an Iphone and I’ve heard the horror stories of the terrible network that AT&T has. I basically can’t complain about my coverage and now the nausea that accompanies the AT&T coverage now gets dumped on us loyal T-Mobile customers. So what can I expect higher rates? Yup. More dropped calls? More than likely… Oh Boy I Can’t Wait! Apparently this is also a sign of things to come because Verizon will more than likely buy out Sprint to constrict our choices even more.  I’m not excited about this at all. So I’m sure our bill will skyrocket very soon and I’m not looking forward to it so thanks AT&T for somehow managing to tick me off without even having you as a provider.

Cut ‘that’ out!

Last Tuesday Jess Manocchio, a communication specialist for Rich Products, visited us and she told us about a typical day in the corporate sector of the industry. Her side of the industry doesn’t particularly interest me, but it was good to see how that works. Her job seems pretty stressful, but fulfilling at the same time so I can’t fault her for doing something she enjoys.

However even though her job doesn’t sound like my cup of tea, there was a lesson reinforced in her presentation. Now I have three different sources that mentioned taking the word ‘that’ out of your writing. My teacher, Jess, and PR daily has an article also lobbying for the removal of the word from your writing. So, what does this mean? PR people are obsessing over grammar, and why not your writing represents you so shouldn’t you sound educated.

 

SXSW almost here

The temperature’s getting warmer, midterms are around the corner, and spring break is within sight, which in Austin means South by Southwest is coming. Now I know it’s still a bit away, 11 days to be exact, but I’d say it’s reasonable to start the countdown. I’ve had friends going to the entertainment festival for a couple of years and yet I’ve never been and this is the first time I’ve been in Austin during the festival so I’m definitely excited.

Being a PR student I’m not only interested in the bands and films coming to town, but what’s being done to promote the event. It’s different then a pervious post that I wrote about Dayglow simply because SXSW is in my opinion the more prestigious event with a more established history. SXSW is so big especially in this area that I’ve heard about it for weeks and while I haven’t seen a lot of ads for the event everyone here knows what it is and when it is.

So with arguably the biggest music and film festival in the United States, where will I be? … Fort Worth, yes that’s right I’ll miss the festival for a third year in a row, but one day I will actually partake in the festivities, unfortunately this year is not the year.

PR Plan for Fresh Beans

  1. Situation – Fresh Beans wants to increase sales amongst college students in the next three months.
  2. Objective – To raise awareness and increase sales within the college community.
  3. Audience – College students in Austin, TX.
  4. Strategy – Pass out free samples at nearby campus’ once a week at each campus for approximately two hours.
  5. Tactics – Start a Twitter account for Fresh Beans and try to get the word out about the free samples for anyone with a student I.D. during designated times.
  6. Calendar – Start at the beginning of February through April
  7. Budget – $0
  8. Measurement – Sales
